COCKTAIL PIANO is a series of piano recordings dedicated to that special type of piano music you might associate with elegant lounges high atop the skyscrapers of New York or with an intimate night club somewhere along the Left Bank in Paris. It is quiet, sophisticated music, not quite jazz and not quite classical but drawing from both schools. It features the great standards of the 1930s and 1940s from such gifted writers as George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington, Rodgers & Hart, and many others. This music is for relaxing and dining and makes a welcome companion in your car. It is music to end your day with and for quiet times on the weekend.
JIM HASKINS divides his time between two different worlds. By day, he is a professional financial adviser. By night, he devotes himself to the piano recordings in this series. Although he was classically trained, it was the influence of jazz pianists who knew how to play the standards with a respect for classical traditions that laid down the musical path he would follow.
FROM THE ARTIST
The seventeen songs you are about to hear keep reminding me of just how rich the legacy of American popular music truly is. First, we salute the great Nat King Cole with two of his best known signature songs, The Very Thought Of You, and Somewhere Along The Way. Then there's I Didn't Know About You, an old Duke Ellington tune I hadn't heard in years, plus a perennial favorite, When Sunny Gets Blue, made famous by Johnny Mathis back in 1956. Jerome Kern reappears with, The Way You Look Tonight and Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. Other selections include, I'll Close My Eyes, and Day By Day. And then there's a big band song I have wanted to do for a long time called, 'Tis Autumn, which has a lyric about the birds and how they navigate which goes, "And after making their decision in birdy-like precision, [they] turned about and made a bee-line for the south". Always liked that line.
All of these and more in Cocktail Piano V. So sit back, relax, and enjoy!
