COCKTAIL PIANO VOL. 11 - “When October Goes

I find it interesting how often I turn to vocalists when looking for something that inspires me at
the piano. Consider the title song, “When October Goes”. I heard it first sung by Barry Manilow
who wrote the melody and learned that the lyrics were by Johnny Mercer found in his notebook after he died. This song is the lineal descendant of September Song whose American lyrics were also penned by Mercer. “I Can’t Begin To Tell You” reminds me of Bing Crosby’s classic rendition back in the 1940’s just as “Because Of You” evokes Tony Bennett. And who can listen to “Hey There” from the musical The Pajama Game without thinking of Rosemary Clooney’s 1954 hit recording? And it was a draw between Astrud Gilberto and Frank Sinatra when I tried “The Girl From Ipanema”. Vocalists, bless ’em, don’t know the power they hold over pianists today just as they did back in Mozart’s time. Also making the list were “Ebb
(Sinatra), “La Vie En Rose” (Piaf), “Linda” (Buddy Clark), and “Imagination” (Cleo Laine).
All of these and more in Cocktail Piano Vol. 11 – “When October Goes”
So sit back, relax, and enjoy!
