 | | Oddly enough, I lucked into it again in a very old fish restaurant in the ancient section of Budapest in the mid '90s. At an opera gala, our host piqued our interest describing the wonderful place where we would dine later. But the real treat to me turned out to be the small ensemble there. As we arrived, gypsy music filled the air with as much character as the stones of the rugged walls. That was good enough, but later I was more than a little startled - and enchanted - when the ensemble began to play the stylish music one might expect to hear in, say, the Russian Tea Room in New York. The group—pianist, violinist, and a guitarist—knew its way around the songs of Vernon Duke, Cole Porter, and Harold Arlen, among others. We could have stayed there all night—and almost did. |
